Well it’s that time of the year when the high street looks to shed some of their load and the summer sales kick off, which unfortunately this year comes at a time when the sun has turned its back on us and the rain is positively torrential. So after ten fabulous frock-filled days, the Cannes film festival came to an end yesterday with Ken Loach scooping his second Palme D’Or for his film I, Daniel Blake. There were a few column worthy events this year, like Charlize Theron & Sean Penn’s extremely awkward run-in to promote the Last Face, which was directed by Seany boy and stars his former beau, Charlize, and Bella Hadid’s Alexandre Vauthier daring red silk wrap gown which had Daily Mail photographers rushing to the shops to get fan blowers to see how she likes her bikini waxed. There was however, one undisputed queen of the festival and that was the second-time pregnant and stunning Blake Likely, who was there to promote her two films – Woody Allen’s Cafe Society and her shark-based (?) horror film The Shallows, and fulfil her role as L’Oréal beauty ambassador. From her cute Giambattista Valli mini with contrasting striped heels to the now infamous Vivienne Westwood Cinderella dress, Serena van der Woodsen didn’t put a foot wrong. Here are just a few of her gorgeous looks:

What’s the first word that comes into your head when you hear the word frilly? Sorry, what was that, I didn’t quite catch that. Knickers, did you say? Yes, indeedy. Think frilly, think knickers! Well this season, frills are all over the place. Seen on the catwalks of the Gucci, Fendi, and Cavalli fashion shows, granny frills are making a comeback. Now, before you start getting all frill-seeking, beware! Going all-out frilly is a high-risk strategy. Keep it clean, don’t, I repeat don’t, go for the full frilling experience. Toilet roll cover is not the look we’re going for. Frills will create bulk, so wear it with plain trousers, or a straight skirt, and keep accessories simple. The frill may be back, but remember, you can have too much of a good thing!
White ruffle top, Topshop

Navy frill dress by Rare, Topshop

You have to hand it to Marks & Spencer, they sell great food! And tights. And knickers that wash well in all sorts of temperatures. And did I mention the tights? And then it’s a bit of a struggle. While their food business has seen increased revenues each year, sadly their clothes side has not. But bless ’em, it’s not for the want of trying! However starting this spring, they are creating a series of M&S &… collections which will see them inviting a range of designers and trendsetters to create capsule collections. Much in the style of the H&M collaborations, but without all the hair-pulling, kicking, and eye-gouging one has come to expect at a H&M launch.
First up to the podium is the ridiculously cool Alexa Chung. I’ve seen Alexa a number of times in the flesh, and she has indeed an undisputed something (or je ne sais quoi, as they said in the 80s), coupled with an effortless style, which will always turn heads. The Archive by Alexa Chung collection consists of 31 pieces taken from the M&S archive, but with a particular focus on the 1940s to 1980s. The pieces have been given a more modern perspective using different colourways and fabrics to give them an “Alexa” feel. The collection features beautiful mini-dresses, wide-leg trousers, a sharp khaki-coloured trench coat, and delicate camisole tops. With prices starting at €29, there’s something for everyone’s budget.
Here are some of the key pieces from the collection, which will definitely feature on my wishlist. The collection will be available in stores and online from April:
